Drivers who does not turn on their signal lights before merging or bluntly cuts you off. Throughout the life of your 1999 GM vehicle, you have enjoyed cool air from the air conditioning unit because of a chemical called freon, which also is known as refrigerant. This chemical cools down the air before it passes through the vents of your vehicle. As the air conditioning system begins to get low on refrigerant, the air will not be as cool and not cool the vehicle as fast. You can bring the vehicle to a mechanic and pay for them to recharge your system for you, but the cheaper alternative is to purchase a R134a refrigerant recharge kit and complete the process yourself.

Step by Step :

Park your vehicle on a level surface. Allow the vehicle to cool down for a half-hour before beginning maintenance to the air conditioning unit.

Locate the air conditioning unit's low side fitting. The low side fitting is located along the low-pressure hose, which runs from the compressor to the accumulator.

Assemble the can of refrigerant included with the recharge kit by attaching the recharge hose that is included with the kit to the top of the refrigerant can. The hose will snap onto the top of the can.

Twist the top of the can to the "on" position.

Connect the refrigerant kit recharge hose to the low side fitting. Ensure the can is upright.

Turn the ignition key to start the engine of your vehicle. Turn the air conditioning setting to the maximum setting available. The recharge process will now begin, and the air should get cooler after a few moments. Allow the air conditioning system to recharge until the refrigerant kit is empty.

Turn the engine off and remove the key from the ignition. Twist the can on the recharge kit to the "off" position and remove from the low side fitting. Once the kit is removed, the system is ready for use. Close the hood of your vehicle.

Attach the quick-disconnect fittings on the red (high-pressure) and blue (low-pressure) hoses from your gauge set to the high-pressure and low-pressure service valves on the air-conditioning lines. In the 1998 Ford Escort, both the low-pressure valve and the high-pressure valve are located on the air-conditioning lines near the passenger side of the firewall.

Set the air-conditioning dash controls to "Max A/C" and "High" blower speed. Start the engine and allow the pressures displayed on the gauges to stabilize.

Attach a can of refrigerant to the can tap on the yellow hose of the gauge set. Open the can by turning the thumb screw on the can tap all the way into the can and then all the way out of the can. Open the blue valve on the gauge set to allow the refrigerant to flow into the system. When the can is empty, close the blue valve on the gauge set, and read the pressure displayed on the gauges. The low-side pressure should be around 35 psi and the high-side pressure should be around 300 psi. Add additional cans of refrigerant until these pressures are reached, but do not over-fill the system.
